Electronic Reader

There is a piece of metal in my hand that shows me letters of the alphabet

Tell me what you want, but holding a real paper book in hand

beats this stuff or have you ever enjoyed sniffing your kindle, e-reader,

pencil scribbled your thoughts in it, earmarked it, put a beautiful book mark

handmade by your children in it, found an old tube ticket in it that reminds

you of a lovely day with a lover, or given it to your friend to read.

Come on, books are made to share and who shares their e-reader????

American Memorial Library in Berlin

Amerika Bibliothek in its beginning 1954 Berlin Kreuzberg

This is truly one of the best public  libraries in Berlin even today. Called “Zentralbibliothek -und Landesbibliothek” this particular one has an excellent archive. That means, most books are not on the shelves, but catalogued in their online database and we simply click to order and it will be brought up within a few minutes or delivered to your local branch, the Stadtbibliothek. I have found many obscure titles here, and of course their selection of English books is vast, but they also have lots of Turkish material, books in Russian, a wonderful music collection, magazines from around the world, and oh I cannot tell you , this is really the place to hang out on a rainy afternoon. But like in many public libraries these days, space is often taken up by students doing their homework and that can be a pain in the rear.

They also have 4 tv units to watch DVDs and videos, yes, they also have an incredible movie collection with international films, and there is even a dark room to watch your movie all by your very lonesome. There is one nuisance and that is that not all subject areas are within this wonderful place. Here you’ll find the Humanities, if you need books on law, science, Berlin stuff and what not, then you have to go to the big old library near the Dom and Alexanderplatz. Well, worth the trip, too. ENJOY your reading afternoons!

At our sites in Berlin-Mitte (Berlin City Library), Berlin-Kreuzberg (America Memorial Library), and Berlin-Charlottenburg/Wilmersdorf (Library of the Berlin Senate, integrated since 1st January 2005) we hold altogether more than 3.4 million electronic and printed media. Our customers may use PC and internet work stations as well as research terminals.”

And today, not changed at all.

No library without computers. Gone are the days when people only wanted books from a library

Book Hunting in India

Finding books in India means getting your hands dirty and digging deep

in Paharganj, New Delhi

In Noida, UP

Most book stalls are outdoors, and even real bookshops often do not work with computers.

The Book Seller in India, for the most part, view their stock as commodity, they don’t keep up

with literary news and trends.  There is a lot of old stock around, and  much of what no one reads

in Europe or America anymore is quite popular in India, such as “Mein Kampf” or

“The Power of Positive Thinking” (1936), Sidney Sheldon or P.G.Wodehouse novels.

Oh, well….

University Library

Not the most inviting place in the world, this college library of the Technical University in Berlin, sponsored by Volkswagen. The artist Elisabeth Arlt was asked to adorn the concrete structure in the inside with quotes. This one here “Dedicated to Lorna with Love” to refer to author’s book dedictions.

Dublin Bookshops

Dublin bookshop full of worms

Dublin bookshop full of winding stairs

Dublin bookshop just up the stairs

Lots of hodging and figging going on here in this shop of books, full of Irish books about Ireland and Irish people and Irish history and Irish sports and Irish poetry and Irish countryside and lots of other green stuff. A bit too Irish all and all for my taste

Dublin's big one, too commercial for my taste, but like the clock outside

No UK nor Irish city without Waterstone, this one here at least has a nice upstairs cafe

Only for the FAINT at heart and the SAINTS at heart. The National Bible Society's book shop.

If you don't like the bars in Temple Bar, just visit the Saturday morning book market and then take the new book to the bar. Cheers!

Dublin still has loads of mysteries to solve!
